Learning Objectives
- Teach children about how adding different ingredients can affect how healthy common meals are
- Reinforce children’s understanding of the recommended portions of different food types
- Educate children about different cooking methods
Getting Started
- Click on the link to the left to start the game
- Click on the instructions pdf on the left and use it as a guide for the game
- Project the game onto the interactive whiteboard
- The game begins by giving some brief examples of different cooking methods
- Talk through these with the class, explaining where appropriate, the implications on health of the different methods.
- Once you are comfortable that the children have sufficient knowledge of the preparation methods, invite a child up to the board.
Some questions to ask during the activity
- Why do ready meals and processed foods often contain a lot of fat/sugar/salt? (to make them taste more attractive)
- What alternatives are there to these foods? (Low fat meals or cook your own!)
- How can people cut down on, say, the amount sugar in tea?
- Where is the information that tells you how much fat is in foods
- Which foods damage teeth?
- How can you reduce the calories in sandwiches? (Use low fat spread or reduced calorie mayonnaise)
- What are benefits of eating a low fat/sugar/salt diet? (You feel better, can be more active, won’t get overweight, are less likely to catch illnesses)
